We are encouraging people to blaze their own trail with an exciting apprenticeship in the automotive industry this National Apprenticeship Week.
Apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity to build useful skills and earn while you learn.
Three people doing just that are Brannen, Keira and Owen who are completing a three-year paint sprayer apprenticeship at CAT, a leading automotive logistics company in Rockingham.
One of the learners, Brannen, said: “It is a really great place to learn on the job whilst earning some money. It’s a good atmosphere and I’m enjoying the experience.”
Apprenticeships are available to school leavers, people upskilling or even individuals who want a complete career change. It’s important to train on-the-job in industries like automotive and RMS want to bring young talent into the industry and provide the next generation with the skills they need to grow.
Laura Murdoch, HR operations director at RMS, said: “Apprentices bring a fresh pair of eyes and new ideas to the company, as well as up-to-date knowledge from training at college. They all have raw talent and it gives us the opportunity to mould them to the way we work. It’s all about developing from within, investing in our people and developing a talented workforce.”
Speaking about working at CAT, apprentice Owen said: “We prep, paint and polish vehicles. I enjoy polishing because it’s stress-relieving.”
Keira added: “What I enjoy the most is the painting, the teamwork and communicating.”
Those interested in an apprenticeship with CAT are set to have a rewarding career as they get hands-on training and the chance to put their skills into practice.
Gary Smith, who mentors the apprentices at CAT, has worked in the automotive trade for 45 years. He said: “A lot has changed over the years. They don’t make cars like they used to. They are far superior. I enjoy mentoring the apprentices. We like to involve them in every aspect of the job, and they are taking to it really well. We leave them to make their own mistakes but then we’re there to help them if and when they need it. Brannen, Keira and Owen are a pleasure to work alongside. They are really shining. It’s a big transition from school to work and they are trusted members of the team.”
