Brexit uncertainty is proving to be a major concern for younger workers, according to the latest research from Hudson, the talent solutions business.
The survey, which interviewed more than 1,000 office workers across the UK, revealed that 87% of 16-34 year-olds are concerned about Brexit’s impact on British jobs – a third (34%) are very or extremely concerned. Overall, three quarters (75%) of working professionals have some concern about the impact Brexit will have on the job market; 29% of which admitted they are very or extremely concerned.
Younger workers are also more concerned about their longer term prospects, with 50% of 16-34 year-olds believing Brexit will make it harder to achieve their career objectives against 36% overall.
As for looking at new job opportunities, 62% of workers said they would feel nervous about looking for a new job in the next six months – 22% said they felt very or extremely nervous. These fears were particularly marked with younger workers: three quarters (78%) of 16-34 year-olds said they were nervous about job hunting, with 30% admitting they were very or extremely nervous.
Hudson’s Managing Director, UK and Ireland, Peter Istead, said:
“With up to a third of UK workers retiring in the next ten years, it’s essential that we take account of the concerns of younger workers, particularly around their future career prospects. This comes on the back of other Hudson research that showed that 85% of younger workers are concerned about the impact of AI on their careers.
“These are real concerns and it is important that employers and, when appropriate, ministers reassure younger workers about their future prospects in the UK economy post Brexit.”
